Black History Month

February is Black History Month

Carter G. Woodson, Harvard historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, recognized the need for the uplifting of Black voices and the truth behind Black contributions to society. He created Negro History week in 1925 which was expanded after his death from a week to a month for Black History Month in 1976 with the decree from President Gerald R. Ford that Americans ought to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout history”.

YWCA Greater Cincinnati honors this month by celebrating the contributions, experiences, and victories of Black people throughout our history AND by celebrating Black history being made in our organization this month with the onboarding of our FIRST Black CEO of YWCA Greater Cincinnati in 154 years. We also honor the ongoing struggle of the Black community across the diaspora and continue the fight to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all throughout this month and every month. Black history is American history.
