Literacy is the ability to read and write. Early literacy encompasses the learning about reading and writing that occurs before a child enters school. Some early literacy skills are book handling, story comprehension, picture reading, and scribbling. Reading to children and talking about books is fundamental to developing an early interest in learning to read and is therefore a key element in HIPPY.
Activities in the literacy domain are centered on the books. Repeated readings of the books, along with the accompanying activities, build children’s comprehension of the stories and familiarity with print. Parents are introduced to the technique of basic dialogic reading, a research-based reading technique that supports oral language and concept development through talking about books.
